Free at Last! Free at Last!

This post isn't to announce my retirement, but to celebrate that I am finally finished with the Project. From. H*ll. (Others may refer to this as Petit Sampling Etui.) I started this in January of 2009 and finished it last Saturday night. I actually probably stitched it twice if you count all the frogging I had to do on this thing. Honestly, I considered giving up stitching at several points during this project. But now it's done. And yes, I know that my initials and the date aren't centered in the hearts, but this panel is on the bottom of the box and no one will see it and I've decided I can live with it. It may be awhile before this appears in a finished form. A woman in my sampler guild did her own finishing and said it took her about 80 hours! I'm planning to have this finished professionally if I can find someone to do it at a reasonable price.
Thanks so much for all your comments about my retirement decision. Ironically, spending the day at a quilt show with two of my retired friends helped me make the decision to keep working. Both of them talked about how they spend their days reading and puttering and don't really get much accomplished. Well, I already have that--it's called summer vacation. I realized that I'm just not ready to stay home permanently. Having made the decision has lifted another weight off my shoulders.

  1. About your retirement decision....there are so many things you could do and not be strapped to a full time job....serious...jump for it...it may not be offered again...and truly..we are not promised tomorrow!!! Food for thought. Dianntha

  2. Congratulations on the finish! That's discouraging about how much frogging you had to do. I think getting it finished for you is a great idea! lol! I'm glad you made a decision about the retirement. :D

  3. Great going on the finishing, Susan! It's beautiful!
I do complain about working full time and not having enough time to do the things I love but I know that for me, right now, I would be bored not working. Maybe part time (for me) would be nice but that's not an option!

  4. It's beautiful Susan! Well worth all the hours from h*ll. I hope that you can get it finished soon. It's going to be beautiful!! There are always two sides to working. I worked for over 25 years and then decided enough was enough. I haven't regretted my decision at all. I'm busier now than I was when I was working and now the busyness is for things I love and my family - not the place where I was just a number. But I know that some people would go stir crazy to stay at home. You just have to decide what is right for you.

  5. You definitely need to follow your own heart...what works for someone else, isn't what would work for you. I know you will be happy with your decision!

This is truly gorgeous, a labor of love!

  6. Congratulations on the finish, and for figuring out what works best for you--even if that's working! :)

    Have a great weekend!
