Quilting 201

Quilting 201 is the class I've been taking at my LQS every Tuesday night since the beginning of January. We've been making a different block each week and I have learned soooo much! The instructor photocopied both the front and back of the blocks so we could see how to press the seams. I can now accurately sew and cut half-square and quarter-square triangles. I can do flying geese with precision and I'm much more confident on foundation piecing. My goal was to take my quilting skills to the next level and I've certainly gotten a start on this from taking the class. And don't you love these fabrics? The "Love" print is from a line last year called "Love is in the Air." The dark pink is from a new line called Whimsicals (I think). These aren't my usual colors at all but these are going to look great for the table runner I'll make out of the class blocks.

    I love the way your teacher is teaching your quilting class. I wish I'd been taught this way. Not only are you learning a lot, you're learning all the little tips and tricks that really make it easier and that take a long time to learn. Way to go!

    That is such a great block - just love the fabrics. And that is one good teacher that will show you the front and back and teach you about how to iron the seams. I've been quilting for a while, and I wish that someone had pointed that out to me back then. All those tips, like Jackie said above, will make things so much easier as you go along.

    Hi Susan - stopping by to comment on your blog while I have my laptop out. You know I am a faithful follower and reader of your blog but can't comment on my new PC - have to drag out my laptop.

    Anyway - what a pretty quilt square and it sounds like this is excellent methodolgy (is that a word?) for learning new techniques. I always enjoy your comments on my blog - hope you are enjoying all the snow up your way - NOT - stay safe and warm if you can - Melody

This Has Been Challenging

I'm participating in year long challenges with both the duClay EGA chapter in Jacksonville, FL and my local guild, Delaware Valley Historic Sampler Guild ( dvhsg.org ).  The challenges are similar since both allowed participants to choose up to a specified number of pieces to focus on during the year, and prizes may be awarded for completion.  Delaware Inspiration from Heart's Ease Examplar Workes is my main focus piece this year.  Here's where I was a week ago.   Notice the vines and leaves on the upper right?  They have been ripped out and re-stitched twice, both times because I was off by one vertical thread.  The frogs have been banished from my house and this is where I was as of last night.  I'm using the Belle Soie silks called for in the chart, and the colors are amazing.

Friday Finish

For at least the past two years, the duClay EGA chapter has hosted a stitch-a-long based on a designer.  Members are free to stitch any design by the designer and it's fun to see what projects everyone is working on.  This year, the chosen designer was Plum Street Samplers.  I had *several* charts to chose from, but decided on Rubie Owl's Sampler.  I used DMC threads on a 36 count linen from my stash and finished it yesterday.  I love the autumn colors and that little owl sitting on top of the tree.  In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to say that stitching those leaves drove me a bit crazy.  I ended up making a working copy of the chart and marking each leaf off as it was stitched since I found it easy to lose track of where I was. Progress Has Been Made

This is the very lovely Ann Smith sampler from The Scarlett Letter.  I started this the first weekend in February.  It was put aside for a month or two, but has become my travel project.  The repetition of the borders make it a great project for my Wednesday afternoon stitching with friends.  I love the colors in this sampler and that keeps me motivated. My friend, Melody at  wooley-thoughts.blogspot.com , keeps encouraging me to return to regular blogging.  During the past few months, we have had several major family situations.  That, coupled with persistent dreary weather in southeast Pennsylvania, made me withdraw from many things.  I seemed to spend a lot more time reading that stitching, and I didn't do any quilting for several months.  I spent time re-evaluating and re-prioritizing what was important to me.  My emotional tide is turning, the weather is better, and I am gradually getting more motivated to resume some ac...
