These Folk are in Their Element

Maybe I've left this display up in my entry way a little too long this year because we've just had our fourth (or is it fifth) snow storm of the year. Plus flurries yesterday and again this morning. It got us an early dismissal from school on Thursday (totally not necessary in my opinion since the stuff wasn't even sticking on the road. Oh, well, I had time to finish up a few reports, go get my nails done and still arrive home by 3:30.) and a snow day on Friday. I spent part of Friday afternoon in my sewing area working on a block from Sylvia's Bridal Quilt. My quilt guild is doing four blocks a month from this book and I joined in to increase my skills. Using templates is a new experience for me and not always successful on the first try. I don't really plan to keep up with four blocks a month, but eventually I'll make enough for a quilt. The rest of Friday afternoon was spent playing with these blocks and others like them. They're for a quilt called "

Coming Out of Hibernation

Can't believe it's been almost three weeks since my last post! We've been through two major snowstorms in southeast PA since that time and I ended up having a whole week off--one sick day to get into the doctor before the storm in case the cough and tightness in my chest and back wasn't just a bad cold (apparently not since she prescribed an antibiotic), three snow days in a row, and President's Day. I read two books (cannot remember the last time I read a book in one day outside of being on an airplane), pieced and backed a coverlet that my LQS will send to Haiti, worked on the Thangles Buck-A-Block from 2009 (in the picture) and began piecing the blocks for the 2010 Thimbleberries Block of the Month. So, all in all, a very restful time during which I barely got out of my pajamas each day. The nicest part was that for each snow day, we got the call that school was cancelled the night before, so I didn't even have to set the alarm. My other big project during

Quilting 201

Quilting 201 is the class I've been taking at my LQS every Tuesday night since the beginning of January. We've been making a different block each week and I have learned soooo much! The instructor photocopied both the front and back of the blocks so we could see how to press the seams. I can now accurately sew and cut half-square and quarter-square triangles. I can do flying geese with precision and I'm much more confident on foundation piecing. My goal was to take my quilting skills to the next level and I've certainly gotten a start on this from taking the class. And don't you love these fabrics? The "Love" print is from a line last year called "Love is in the Air." The dark pink is from a new line called Whimsicals (I think). These aren't my usual colors at all but these are going to look great for the table runner I'll make out of the class blocks.
